Rectortown United Methodist Church

Rectortown United Methodist Church, located on Rectortown Road between Atoka Road and Maidstone Road, is one of Fauquier County's oldest Methodist churches. In fact, on May 18, the church will celebrate its 227th Homecoming with a special service followed by a covered-dish lunch.

All are invited to the Homecoming celebration, which will begin at 10:30 a.m. with a special selection of music by renowned organist Hunter Payne.

The service will begin at 11 a.m. and will feature an uplifting sermon by Rectortown's exciting young pastor, Chris Bennett. Then at noon, the food at an RUMC Homecoming is not to be missed.

Child care will be offered during the service. There is nursery care for children through age 4, and Children's Church with a Bible lesson for ages 5 and up.

The church was founded in the early 1780s. Its congregation first met in the German Reformed building, located at the site of the present-day Rectortown Cemetery. It is recorded that in the early days, Methodist Bishop Francis Asbury visited Rectortown and preached there.

In 1844, the Murray family sold a lot in the village to the Methodist congregation for $1. Property for the present church was acquired in the 1870s, and the church building was erected shortly afterward. This year, the church acquired the neighboring property and home for future expansion plans.

Bennett has been minister of Rectortown UMC since July 2006, and this summer will be ordained as an elder of the United Methodist Church.

He previously served as an associate pastor in Richmond. He is a 2003 graduate of Union-PSCE in Richmond and received his undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech in 1996.

Prior to entering pastoral ministry, Bennett worked in youth ministry and marketing.

Regular Sunday services at Rectortown UMC are held at 10:45 a.m., preceded by Sunday school at 9:30. During services, the church now offers nursery care for age 4 and under, and Children's Church for age 5 and up. Child care is also offered at most church events.

The church Web site at www.rectortownumc.org has a calendar of events, the most recent newsletter, and other helpful information.
