The Plains: Sign up now for May 31 craft show

The mock oranges are open, and this is the year for the yellowwood tree to bloom.

The beautiful trees bloom every other year, and the blossoms are forming on the ends of the branches for their debut. Soon, the pink or white flowers will be covering the tree, a sight to see.

Yellowwoods are rare trees that are easy to grow, fascinating in their habits and completely forgotten by the nursery trade. If it has a bad habit, besides perhaps a brief life by tree standards, I cannot think of one.

You may have thought Mother's Day was just a one-day celebration, but Crest Hill Antiques believes mothers need a whole month to celebrate.

The Tea Room at Crest Hill Antiques is offering a Mother's Day Tea throughout the entire month of May.

The Plains Community League's incredibly fun The Plains Yard Sale will be held this Saturday, May 17, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The John Page Community House.

Sellers can rent 10x10-foot spaces to display their wares for only $10. To rent your space for the May 17 yard sale, contact The Plains Community League at (540) 253-5470.

In addition to the yard sale items, The Plains Library will throw open its doors and have book sale tables on the porch of The John Page Turner Community House.

The library will be selling selected hardcover and paperback books at bargain basement prices.

Bargain hunters will definitely want to be in The Plains at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 17, to attend the St. Mark's Methodist Church yard and bake sale. Stop by the church on East Main for delicious hot coffee and browse through yard sale items such as baseball cards, office furniture, couches, books and toys.

If there are crafters in The Plains that need another outlet to sell their wares, the Marshall Ruritan Club has space available to rent for the Saturday, May 31, craft show and is looking for crafters and vendors from the surrounding areas.

Local venues for ballet are difficult to find, but if you are willing to glide down Zulla Road towards Upperville, you can see the ASAPH Dance Ensemble at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 18.

This ballet presentation of "Celtic Joy" is a fundraiser, and tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and children under 12 years of age. The event will be held at the venerable Buchanan Hall, 8549 John Mosby Highway, Upperville.

Birthdays roll out with Clarke Wright on May 14, and Finn Cook blowing out the candles on May 17, followed up by his mother, Mert Cook, on May 18.
