A Perfect Fitt: Tutt, Pitt excel in 2008
It would be hard to classify one of the best seasons in the University of Pittsburgh's softball history as a disappointment.
It would be harder still to label former Highland School star Reba Tutt's freshman year as anything short of sensational.
The Panthers' season came to an end on May 8, when they lost a heartbreaking 4-3, 11-inning game to DePaul in the Big East Tournament quarterfinals.
As usual, the Culpeper native did her part in the frustrating loss. She led off the game by reaching second, and came around to score, giving Pitt an early 1-0 lead.
That was her 38th run scored in 2007-2008 — good for third-best on the team.
More notably, she led the Panthers with 26 stolen bases, just five shy of the school's all-time single-season record of 31. Sheena Hellon set that mark in 2006-07. "I try not to think about it really, I just kind of go out there and play," Tutt said in late April of chasing Hellon's mark. "This way, I'm not stressing myself out."
Pittsburgh finished the season 31-25, with a school-best 12 Big East league wins.
The schedule was a grind. The Panthers played 66 games in three months, with contests in Florida, Nevada, Kansas, Ohio, Kentucky and several other states...
