Markham: Breakfast at firehouse Sunday

Good morning on this windy, rainy day. Daylight finally arrived, and we were able to assess what that dreadful "thump" heard during the night really was. The porch swing and its stand had left the porch and landed in the flower bed. No real damage; just a mess to clean up.

"Music Through the Ages," a wonderful program of secular and religious music, will be presented by the Leeds Episcopal Church choir at 6 p.m. Sunday, May 18, in the parish hall.

The program will include supper. There is no charge for the meal, but donations will be accepted. If you plan to attend, please call (540) 364-2849. Your response will help determine the amount of food prepared.

Our neighbors, Stuart and Bahr Kinzer, have left the Hume area to make their home in New Mexico.

Bahr's parents, Margaret and Jack, were residents of the area and active members of Leeds Church for many years until retirement took them to Tennessee. Our best wishes go with Bahr and Stuart while they pursue some new interests.

The cats who share this house have some very realistic mouse toys which they enjoy. These furry little critters can be found in some odd places at odd times.

They are usually given a little nudge with one's foot and the play goes on. Friday morning in that half light of dawn, the foot nudge moved a small grey corpse across the dining room floor. The mouse had been dispatched by someone who did not admit to murder. Ugh.

Wires down. Motor vehicle accident. Illness. Our local Orlean Volunteer Fire Department responded to four calls at the same time during the storm Sunday night.

Our volunteers are always there for us, and they need our support. The monthly breakfast will be held from 8-11 a.m. Sunday, May 18. Come out to enjoy the meal and show your support. At $7, for all you care to eat, it's a real bargain.

Jim Stribling and John Wise will celebrate their birthdays in the next few days. Greetings and best wishes for both of these good gentlemen.

Karen and Brian Moore will celebrate their wedding anniversary next week.
