Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church
Historic Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church is located at 10023 Wesley Chapel Road, off Leeds Manor Road (Route 688) south of Orlean.
The church was organized in 1844, meeting in the building still in use today. Looking closely, one can read names carved into the building's stones by the people that built the church under the direction of Abraham Johnson.
In 1985, the original structure was restored. In 1991, a fellowship hall, classrooms and office were added. In order to maintain the historic look of Wesley Chapel, the new addition was finished with the same stonework as the original.
During the lifetime of the church, it has continuously been used as a place of worship and fellowship. During the Civil War, Wesley Chapel was used as a hospital.
Some members of the present congregation recall coming to church early on Sunday morning to light and stoke the stove in the sanctuary in order to provide outer warmth to match the inner warmth of the congregation.
The Rev. Jim McGinnis continues his ministry with Wesley Chapel as he completes his studies at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C.
Pastor Jim and all members of the congregation would like to encourage everyone to attend worship with the Wesley Chapel family any Sunday, beginning with Sunday school for children and adults at 10 a.m. and worship at 11 a.m. They would also like to invite all to share in our second Sunday potluck luncheon after worship.
Programs include youth fellowship and JOY in Missions for elementary-age children, led by Director of Christian Education Lee Land and a wonderful group of volunteers. Adult Bible study meets on Thursday evenings.
The music program at Wesley Chapel flourishes under the direction of Randy Minter, who also serves as the church lay leader.
The United Methodist Women play a very important role in missions and outreach, raising funds for local needs and in the greater community of our Lord.
Funds raised from bake sales and the annual October bazaar help support the homeless shelter, Fauquier food coalition, overseas missionaries, and numerous other charitable activities. The Wesley Chapel United Methodist Women meet on the third Tuesday each month.
The members of Wesley Chapel participate with the Fauquier County Food Coalition and also sponsor a Food Closet Ministry available to those in Fauquier County in need.
