In a physical rematch, Culpeper edges LHS, 9-7, in boys lacrosse

After a difficult start to the boys lacrosse season, Liberty picked up its first win over Culpeper on April 7.

Last Thursday, Culpeper turned the tables.

The Blue Devils, after a miserable 0-9 start, finally broke into the win column — downing visiting LHS, 9-7 in a hard-fought, physical battle.

"I hate losing to a team we've already beaten, because we know we're capable," Liberty coach Rich Klares said.

The Eagles won the first contest between the teams, 8-6.

Round two proved equally competitive. Culpeper took a 4-3 lead into halftime, and stretched that to 7-5 with 8:35 left.

Liberty rallied back, tying the game at seven on goals by Kenny May and Nick Glowicki.

Host Culpeper, desperate for a victory, responded, though.

Just 46 seconds after Glowicki knotted the game at seven, Blue Devil Stevie Strother spun through three LHS defenders and scored the game-winner.

"I started feeling like, 'Oh man, we're going to let it go,' said CCHS freshman Nathan Miller, who scored an insurance marker with 6.6 seconds to play, "but we pulled it out."

Strother netted a hat trick — with all three goals coming off sensational individual efforts...
