FHS boys lacrosse team whips Culpeper to clinch district title

With a seven-goal lead at halftime of their 12-2 victory over Culpeper Monday, the Fauquier Falcons knew it'd be only 24 minutes until they became Cedar Run District champions.

The also knew the wait would be much longer to see if they'd have to share that title.

"It’s out of our control at this point," FHS coach Reed Gillespie said after the game. "Now it’s waiting and waiting and waiting."

The Falcons, having completed their regular season schedule with Monday's win, expected to learn their fate following a slate of district games Tuesday night. They knew an Osbourn Park loss to Osbourn would give them sole possession of the district title and an automatic berth in the Northwest Region tournament, while an OP victory would create a three-team playoff scenario between Osbourn Park, Loudoun Valley and Fauquier.

The Falcons beat Loudoun Valley in their one regular season matchup that counted toward the district standings but lost to Osbourn Park, while OP lost to Loudoun Valley, which created a crowd at the top of the district.

Regardless, with the win over Culpeper (1-10 overall, 1-7 district), the 2008 Falcons became the winningest lacrosse team in Fauquier history. They finished the regular season on a seven-game win streak for a 10-2 overall record (6-1 district)...

See the Wednesday print edition of the Fauquier Times-Democrat for the complete story.
