Fauquier's McCartin accepts football walk-on offer at UVa.

Suffering a torn ACL last football season didn’t end Kyle McCartin’s scholarship quest, but it made it a more laborious pursuit.

In lieu of immediate athletic scholarship offers, the Fauquier High senior decided in early April to attend the University of Virginia next fall and join the football team as an invited walk on. Once recruited by a handful of Division I programs, McCartin will now try to earn a scholarship by climbing up the quarterback depth chart in the coming years.

“I have to work really hard, work my way up the roster and if I earn the third or second string spot I’d be put on scholarship,” said McCartin, who will compete with three quarterbacks on scholarship and two other walk ons. “If I can go back to playing better than I was before, then there’s definitely an opportunity.”

“I already liked Virginia since freshman year of high school, so getting a chance to play football there helped a lot,” McCartin said of his decision. “Academics was a big part of it. To come out of college and have a degree from UVa. is huge..."
