Catlett: Yard/bake sale this Saturday

We will all be reminded this week through promotions in businesses that Mother's Day is Sunday, May 11. I thought it interesting, while reading this week about Mother's Day, that the first one was celebrated in 1907 in honor of the deceased mother of Anna M. Jaruis. Jaruis organized a special service and made corsages out of 500 carnations, her mother's favorite flower, for this event.

She then campaigned for seven years, until President Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May a national holiday to honor our mothers.

As this day quickly degenerated into a commercial hoopla, Anna Jaruis spent the rest of her life arguing in letters, pamphlets and editorials that the holiday had been intended to inspire simple, loving gestures toward our mothers.

If you still have your mom with you, don't forget her on Sunday, and if you no longer have your mom, sit and reflect on her and the things she taught you with love and devotion.

Joan and Brad Douglas joined a group from Warrenton on a bus tour through interesting sites in the south. One of the stops featured two small churches just about to close, due to lack of funds and church attendance, when artist Ben Long came by and painted three frescoes.

This revived the old falling-down churches in 1974, and they stand today, not only for worship services, but as a tourist attraction.

For the full story and an interesting visit, head out for Glendale Springs, N.C., this summer. The tour bus went on to Savannah, Ga., visiting many sites there, as well as other stops along the way.

There will be a yard and bake sale at Faith Christian School, 3005 Dumfries Road, Catlett, from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 10. Proceeds will help keep tuition low for the children of our community who attend this school. Along with the yard sale, there will be bake tables set up also. For more information, call (540) 272-2663.

The Fauquier Girls Softball fundraiser will be a "Fun-Raising" night from 5-9 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, at Friendly's, 111 West Lee Highway, Warrenton. Ten percent of your bill will go to support the league. For information, call (540) 270-3285 or (540) 351-0113 or e-mail colinborgstrom@fauquiergirlssoftball.com.

The Fauquier High School theater program has been chosen to perform at the American High School Theatre Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland, in August 2009. There were approximately 55 other high schools nationwide given this honor, and only two schools in Virginia received it. More about this later, I'm sure. Congratulations to all.
