Two Hawks garner All-State honors

As ceremonies go, it was the equivalent of the Teen Choice Awards.

Highland School senior Hannah Safren emerged from the locker room for softball practice on Tuesday. Coach Donald O'Meara greeted her.

“By the way, you made basketball All-State,” O'Meara mentioned casually. “Congratulations.”

Dramatic presentation or not, Safren joined teammate Denae Davis on the Virginia Independent Schools Division II girls basketball All-State team, released Monday.

Joining them were Kristen Blalock (Portsmouth Christian), Jessica Watkins (Virginia Episcopal), Caroline Wilke (Walsingham) and Player of the Year Kelly Korkowski (Walsingham).

For Davis, it was a return trip to the All-State roster — she also claimed a spot in 2007, her first at Highland.

“I didn't really expect it,” said the senior. “But I'm happy I got it.”

Davis, also the Delaney Athletic Conference MVP, recently decided to play college hoops at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania.

“It kind of makes me stress free,” she said of her decision.

Safren, meanwhile, will compete for Shepherd University next season.

She earned her first All-State spot, despite missing six games with an ankle injury this season.

“It's a great honor,” she said. “The injury didn't affect me that much, because when game time comes you don't really feel the pain.”

Davis was likely in the running for Division II Player of the Year honors until Highland lost to Walsingham in the final.

Korkowski scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as Highland lost to Walsingham for the third straight year.

“We definitely helped the cause for her to get [Player of the Year],” said O'Meara, laughing, of Korkowski. “I felt like the year before, even though we lost, Denae showed she was the best player in the state.”

She'la White of Norfolk Collegiate and Jamilia Harris of Carlisle were named the Division I and Division III Player of the Year, respectively.
