Obstacle clinic upcoming

The Tri-State Riding Club will host a judged pleasure ride obstacle clinic March 29 on Limestone School Road north of Leesburg. Details are online at www.tristaterc.org.


New horse expo

The Piedmont Horse Expo 2008 will be held March 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Culpeper Agricultural Enterprise in Culpeper. The event is set up to educate about horse care and safety with many demonstrations and seminars. The cost is $5 per person with children under 12 admitted free. Details are at (540) 727-3435.


Patrice Edwards clinic

Dressage trainer Patrice Edwards will teach a three-day clinic May 10-12 at Rose Folly Farm in Markham and Valhalla Farm in Hume. A grand prix level rider, Edwards is a member of the "Training the Teachers of Tomorrow Trust" in England.

Clinic costs range from $10 per day for auditors to $250 for three days of riding. Call (540) 364-1710 to register.


Equine center, Virginia Tech join forces

Virginia Tech's Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center in Leesburg will host a Hokie Volunteer Day for alumni from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, April 11.

The center is a full-service equine hospital that offers advanced specialty care, 24-hour emergency treatment and diagnostic services for all ages and breeds of horses. It is one of three campuses that comprise the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine.

Dr. Joyce Harman of Flint Hill will conduct a saddle fitting clinic March 20-23 at Toad Hollow Farm in Charlottesville. Harman, a holistic veterinarian, authored the book "The Horse's Pain-Free Back and Saddle Fitting."

Mackay-Smith a finalist

Pfizer Animal Health and the American Horse Publications have selected winners of the 2008 Equine Industry Vision Award. The award is intended to recognize innovation, leadership and service.

Finalists include Clarke County veterinarian Dr. Matthew Mackay-Smith, whose father Alexander won the first Vision award in 2002. Other finalists are Dr. Marvin Beeman, Charlotte Brailey Kneeland, the Louisiana State University equine studies program, Sally Swift and Linda Tellington-Jones.


Lamina Blue story continues

Lamina Blue, orphaned at birth, raised by a pony surrogate and named in a contest, had her first winner on the track recently at Charles Town Races in West Virginia, when daughter Katrina Blue won a maiden race for owner-breeder Rutledge Farm and trainer Jeff Runco.

The Virginia-bred 3-year-old was sired by Housebuster, who stood service at Blue Ridge Farm in Upperville, where Lamina Blue was born and raised.


BBHSA series returns

The Back to Basics Horse Show Association will host a series of shows at Lucky Drive Ranch in Catlett. English show dates are April 20, May 17, June 22, July 19, Sept. 14 and Oct. 18. Touch Point plans

Touch Point Farm in Culpeper will host two show series this year. Dressage shows and combined tests are set April 13, June 28, Aug. 9 and Sept. 14. Feed seminar slated

Dr. John Lew from McCauley Brothers Inc. will present a seminar on "Feed and supplements: fact vs. fiction" at the Grymes Memorial School in Orange on March 26 at 6 p.m. Topics include understanding what a feed tag means, protein myths, the low carb craze and the hazards of over-supplementation. There will be a question and answer period following the lecture.

Frank Bell clinic in April

Horse trainer Frank Bell will teach a "gentle solutions" clinic April 19 and 20 at Moonraker in Catlett from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. both days. Bell will help horse owners deal with behavior problems ranging from shying and prancing, to aggressiveness and trailer loading. Auditors are welcome. Nutrition conference next week

Therapeutic benefit April 21

The inaugural Golden Dreams Therapeutic Riding Center benefit golf tournament is set April 21 at the Dominion Valley Country Club in Haymarket.
