Remington is home to a new jewelry store

The jewelry store in Remington has quite a distinction, according to the owner.

"It's the only jewelry store between Culpeper and Warrenton," said Joe Korpsak, proudly.

The little store is next to and a part of the building that Korpsak owns on Main Street.

"We call it 'The Littlest Jewelry Shop,' " the owner said. "And it is pretty small."

The shop opened just before Christmas.

"And that was a good time to do it because there were a lot of people buying at the last minute, and now that it's Valentine's Day [the interview took place on Feb. 14] I suppose that after work tonight the guys will be coming in to buy something for their valentines."

Though little, the shop is mighty, according to Korpsak.

"We've got all kinds of jewelry, including new, pre-owned and estate jewelry, and the price range is from low to moderate, nothing high end," he explained.

Korpsak said that he used to work for the U.S. Government.

"I used to work for the department of Commerce, helping people get into small businesses, and it was a natural thing for me to go into business for myself," he stated. "I was 20 years with the Feds, and the commute was starting to get to me, so I retired and opened my own business with Absolute Beta, which I opened to service Betamaxes. And you know, I'm still servicing them nationwide. People need a working machine so that they can transfer their Beta tapes to DVDs."

Right next door is the Remington Community Variety Building, which houses the rest of the inventory that Korpsak sells.

"Over there I've got glassware, video games, prints, used merchandise of all kinds," he said.

It was his experience in the original store that led him to open the jewelry store.

"I had some jewelry in there, and one time a gentleman came in and was looking at it, and it dawned on me that between Culpeper and Warrenton there are no jewelry shops, and I thought that we needed one here, in Remington."

Korpsak said that he followed the advice he used to dole out to his small business clients at the government.

"I think that when you're starting out, you need to start off small, and not get so overstocked," he explained. "Start off with a small inventory, and you get a sense of what people really like, and you get special requests, and that tells you what people in your area want in the way of merchandise."

The entrepreneur said that he is willing to search for an item for a customer.

"We had a woman in here not long ago who wanted a particular kind of earrings, and I'm looking for them for her. It's just a part of what I call customer service."

The Remington Community Variety Building Jewelry Store is open Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. To 6 p.m. and on Sundays by appointment. The shop is located at 227 East Main Street in Remington. The phone number is (540) 439-3259. The Web site is www.absolutebeta.com . Click on "jewelry."
