LFCC president to leave post

Lr read

Dr. “Ski” is leaving.

John J. “Ski” Sygielski, the third president of Lord Fairfax Community College, is leaving his position June 6 to accept the presidency of Mount Hood Community College in Portland, Ore. The Virginia Community College System will launch a search for his replacement.

Sygielski arrived at LFCC in August 2003, and during his tenure the college established a third location and implemented its first sports program.

His high school outreach program resulted in a 25 percent increase in the number of dual-enrolled students. Increases were also achieved with the reorganized college foundation, raising almost $4 million to benefit students and employees.

Known for his charismatic leadership and interaction with others, the energetic president hosted forums on the changing demographics of LFCC's service area and established working relationships with governmental and community leaders.

Sygielski was elected to the American Association of Community Colleges Board of Directors and served on the governor's Commonwealth Manufacturing Development Commission.

He was awarded the Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction for Phi Theta Kappa. The Phil Sprenkle Vocation Award from the Winchester Rotary Club, and the Executive of the Year by a regional chapter of the International Association of Administrative Professionals.

“Education is about transforming lives,” Sygielski said. “LFCC has transformed my life and I will always be grateful.

“As with any career move, there are always things you will miss about the position you are leaving. At LFCC, I will definitely miss the people.”

Sygielski stressed that his decision to take the new position was based on “an opportunity for professional growth.”

“Leading the college has been one of the best and most rewarding experiences of my life,” he added.
