Highland falls just short again

The Highland girls just can't get past Walsingham. For the third straight year, the Hawks lost the VIS Division II title game to the Trojans. This time, Walsingham pulled out a 42-37 win on Saturday afternoon at Paul VI Catholic School.

A miserable offensive second quarter did Highland in. After charging out to a 14-12 first quarter lead thanks to a dozen Maire Shaughnessy points, the Hawks scored just two points in the second - on an Erin Whitney layup with 40 seconds left.

Highland trailed 25-16 at halftime, but pulled within four after three. Walsingham stiffened, though, holding off Highland for the win.

Lots more coverage of Saturday's final to follow, both online and in Wednesday's Fauquier Times-Democrat.
