Woman pleads guilty
A Fairfax woman who was allegedly involved in a fracas that resulted in a Virginia state trooper being hit by a car May 3 has pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges.
Assunta Gina Crocenzi, 43, appeared in Fauquier County General District Court June 19. Court records indicate Judge Charles B. Foley found her guilty of a misdemeanor count of assault and battery on a law enforcement officer and a misdemeanor count of obstruction of justice.
Foley sentenced Crocenzi to a year in jail, but suspended all but 15 days of the term. He also put her on one year of unsupervised probation and ordered her to pay $116 in court costs by Sept. 19.
Prosecutors opted not to pursue a disorderly conduct charge also filed against Crocenzi.
The incident that resulted in the charges happened at approximately 5:45 p.m., in the area of the gate eight exit from the Great Meadow Field Events Center and U.S. 17.
Apparently some type of altercation occurred inside the complex and a sheriff's deputy intervened, Mahler said. When a woman who was involved in the altercation did not comply with the deputy's orders, the trooper went to help, Mahler added.
The woman was later identified as Crocenzi.
The driver of the car she was in was later identified as John Hilliard Masterson of Fairfax, He also failed to comply with the trooper's orders to stop and exit the vehicle, Mahler said. Masterson allegedly kept driving and struck the trooper, who was dragged "for several seconds."
The trooper, who was from another area, had been assigned to assist local authorities at Gold Cup. He reportedly sustained non life-threating injuries.
Masterson is facing a felony charge of assault and battery of a law enforcement officer. The case was initially heard in General District Court and has been forwarded to the Fauquier County grand jury, which will meet next month.
