Mark Scott named FHS football coach

For an algebra teacher, this is a pretty simple equation:

One newborn baby, plus a roster of more than 50 football players, equals enormous responsibility.

And that's all been put on the shoulders of Mark Scott in the last 96 hours.

Four days after the birth of his second child, Scott was announced as Fauquier High’s newest head football coach Tuesday at a press conference in the school cafeteria.

"It is a little overwhelming [but] I’m excited about being the head football coach," said Scott, who became Fauquier's ninth head coach since opening in 1963. “Having my little girl on Friday, it puts football in perspective. It’s obviously the second-most important thing to me right now."

Fauquier football is plenty important to him, though, and he's been integral to its recent success as well.

Scott, 29, has been Fauquier's offensive coordinator over the past three season and replaces head coach Greg Hatfield, who resigned in May to take the head coaching position at Eastern View High in Culpeper.

Hatfield's late departure, put Fauquier in a bit of a bind.

“I think that the disadvantage has worked as a positive for us because we hired within and the kids know the coaches," FHS athletic director Allen Creasy said.

Fauquier heard from a few applicants from outside the school, but a lack of teaching openings helped eliminate them, so in addition to Scott, co-defensive coordinator Ron Watkins and lineman coach Jamie Carter were the only candidates to interview.

Tuesday, they stood wearing suits alongside Scott as Creasy announced Fauquier's decision.

“He just stood out as a little bit better than the other two," Creasy said. "He had a little more time and experience because he came from [Central High in] Woodstock with Coach Hatfield and had been in the system a little longer."

Scott joined Hatfield's staff at Central in 2002 after graduating in 2001 from Westminter College (New Wilmington, Pa.), where he ran track for four years and played basketball for two.

Also the distance coach for Fauquier's track and field team, Scott last played football at Eisenhower High School in Russell, Pa., but two seasons as a quarterback and one as a wide receivers laid the foundation for becoming an offensive coordinator...

See the Wednesday print edition of the Fauquier Times-Democrat for the complete story.
