New show series in Hamilton

Red Gate Farm in Hamilton will host a series of Virginia Horse Shows Association associate shows this year. Show dates are: June 7, July 6, Aug. 16 and Sept. 20. Classes begin at 9 a.m. Details are at (540) 882-3530 or online at www.RedGateFarmVA.com.


Abernathy to teach in Opal

Bull Run rides this summer

The Bull Run Hunt will host a series of open trail rides this summer from fixtures around their territory south of Culpeper. The June 7 ride meets at 9 a.m. at Maple Lawn; June 21 at 9 a.m. at Hawfield Grange; July 12 at 9 a.m. at Bending River; July 19 at 9 a.m. at the Simms Place; Aug. 9 at 9 a.m. at the hunt's clubhouse; and Aug. 31 at 9 a.m. at Birmingham Farm. A potluck lunch follows each ride.

Dodson clinic downtown

Horseman Jamie Dodson of Legacy Horse Training will give a free ground-training clinic June 7 starting at 2 p.m. at the Galloping Grape tack shop in Warrenton. There will also be an ongoing natural hoof trimming demos throughout the day by Cara Potter.

Loudoun West ride May 31

The Loudoun Hunt West will host the first in their trail ride series on Saturday, May 31 from Valley View Farm in Hamilton at 9 a.m. A tailgate will follow the two-hour ride; there will be be jumping and non-jumping groups. The cost is $25.

Other rides are June 14 at Thunder Run, June 28 at the 100 Acre Field, July 12 at Yellow Wood, July 26 at Windswept, Aug. 9 at Morven Park and Aug. 23 at Hillbrook. Details are on the hunt's Web site: www.loudounhuntwest.org or call (540) 338-6562.


LH summer series

The Loudoun Hunt will host trail rides June 6 from the Gettysville Battlefield, June 21 at Dianna Lodge, Aug.; 9 from Foxglen, and Aug. 23 from Maintree Farm.


Horse history exhibit in NYC

The American Museum of Natural History in New York City has a new exhibit, "The Horse," in place through Jan. 4, 2009. The exhibit traces how the horse has shaped human history, with dioramas, cultural artifacts from around the world, and interactive.

Rodeo series listed

The Twisted K Ranch in Round Hill has posted its rodeo schedule for the summer. All-around rodeos are slated at the farm June 14, July 12, Sept 13 and Oct. 11.

Twisted K will put on bull riding events June 28 at Chapel View Farm in Leesburg, July 10 at the Fauquier Fairgrounds in Warrenton, Aug. 2 in Winchester, Aug. 6 in Front Royal, Aug. 9 at Great Meadow in The Plains, Aug. 15 in Berryville and Aug. 21 in Luray.

Combined test series returns

The Winslett Advantage will host a Short Circuit show June 15 at the Warrenton Horse Show grounds. TWA also has jumper shows set at Sumerduck Run Farm in Culpeper June 17, July 8 and 22 and Aug. 5.

Oare, Upperville enter Hall of Fame

Warrenton's Betty Oare was inducted into the National Show Hunter Hall of Fame recently. Oare, who most recently rode to the highest score of all amateur-owner hunters at the Devon Horse Show in Pennsylvania, was joined by Hall inductees Sandy Dennehy and Harry Gill.

The venerable Upperville Colt and Horse Show, entering its 155th year this week, was voted Horse Show of the Year for 2007.
