Liberty seniors excel at marksmanship camp in N.C.
There are summer camps designed for kids of all sports interests. Want to work on your jump shot, volleyball spike or cheerleading lift, it's no problem finding a camp for you.
But what about marksmanship?
For Robert Young and Alex Wolfe, two Liberty High students who enjoy riflery, a recent journey to North Carolina satisfied their urge to become better shooters.
In mid-July, Young and Wolfe attended the Appleseed Project's week-long Marksmanship Instructor Boot Camp in Ramseur, N.C., and came away with a greater knowledge of how to teach rifle skills.
Wolfe also left with a fresh appreciation for gun safety when several of his fellow participants were scolded for sweeping their rifle muzzles too close to fellow shooters during one shooting session. “They said if they did it again they would not be allowed to shoot the rest of the week,” said Wolfe.
Besides learning how to be instructors, Young and Wolfe earned high marks as shooters, recording expert scores in a competition that simulates the Armed Forces Qualification Test.
Young set a range record for his perfect score of 50 in the standing offhand competition, while Wolfe had a range record with a perfect 50 in the prone slow fire.
“I feel good about my score,” said Young, who drilled 10 straight shots through a target that measured eight inches tall and six inches wide, he said.
