National Night Out observed next week
Two local law enforcement agencies will participate in the 25th anniversary of National Night Out on Aug. 5.The festivities will include a cookout hosted by the Remington Police Department. Residents are invited to stop by the Police Department on Main Street from 7 to 9 p.m.
This is the first year the Remington Police Department is participating in the event.
"Our chief, [Tom Beecherl, has been striving to improve the Remington Police Department since he has taken over the position," said Officer Tim Benjamin. "One of the key factors in improving our department is to promote a community-police partnership. We thought this would be a good opportunity to start a new tradition."
Fauquier County deputies will be at the Marshall townhouses beginning at 6 p.m. Two bikes will be raffled off there.
The National Association of Town Watch is a non-profit, crime-prevention organization which works in cooperation with thousands of crime watch groups and law enforcement agencies throughout the country.
The association introduced National Night Out, "America's Night Out Against Crime," in 1984.
At the time, then Executive Director Matt A. Peskin felt a national program was needed to heighten awareness and strengthen participation in local anti-crime efforts.
He proposed a national program which would be coordinated by local crime prevention agencies and organizations — and involve entire communities at one time.
The first National Night Out was proposed early in 1984 with the event culminating on the first Tuesday in August. In the first year, 400 communities in 23 states participated. Nationwide, 2.5 million Americans took part in National Night Out events.
The event has grown considerably since then.
Last year, more than 35 million people from more than 11,000 communities in all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide participated in the event.
More than 12,000 communities are expected to participate this year.
