Mark Gorby hired as LHS golf coach
Mark Gorby, Liberty High's recently-hired golf coach, could probably guide any sport his new school wants him to.
The 46-year-old says he's taught it all at — golf, basketball, tennis, football, baseball — at the four previous schools he's worked at in Texas and Virginia.
Most recently, Gorby coached the boys basketball team at Broadway High near Harrisonburg.
But golf is what LHS needs, and Gorby comes in ready to roll. “I've got three days to get a team picked,” the Eagles' newest physical education teacher said Tuesday. “I'm shooting for 12 kids, and need to select the top six for the first tournament.”
Gorby inherits about seven players from last year's squad, including top guns Steven Massei and Sam Owens.
Practice begins Friday at Kastle Greens Golf Club, where Gorby meets his team for the first time. He has less than a week before the season-opening Curly Licklider tournament Aug. 6. Also next week is the Combs Cup Aug. 7-8 against Fauquier and Kettle Run.
Gorby coached Rockwall High to the Class 4A golf title in Texas in 1998. “We had four Division I golfers on that team,” said the new coach. He says the sport is so popular in Texas that it was played in both the spring and fall.
His method of teaching will involve skill development and course management advice. “In golf a lot of them are already pretty sound fundamentally. What I always try to do is set up practice stations where they can work on improving their game at the different stations. I'll also use the top golfers to help kids coming up,” Gorby said...See the Wednesday print edition of the Fauquier Times-Democrat for the complete story.
