Warrenton's Evans inducted into Wisconsin-Superior Athletic Hall of Fame
Ron Evans owns a framing store in Warrenton. Evans Framing, Inc., can cater to your many remodeling needs.
But there's another thing Evans can frame for you in his sleep: a shot on goal in ice hockey.
Evans, 41, is a former college star at the University of Wisconsin-Superior who was recently inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame.
He took his family to the ceremony in Wisconsin last week, where he was honored with a plaque and asked to give a speech.
It was wonderful moment for Evans, who is teaching two of his four kids the game and still carries nostalgic memories of the days when ice hockey meant everything to him.
Evans, who played forward, said he was a student of hockey who spent hours practicing. He was named Wisconsin-Superior's most dedicated player his junior and senior years.
“I was not a big guy, a strong guy or a fast guy,” said Evans. “I had a good sense of where to be. It's important to anticipate where the puck will go.”
Despite his lack of size —then 5-foot-9, 185 pounds — Evans describes himself as a proficient goal scorer and playmaker who continually ranked as one of the team's top points producers. “I scored on a lot of rebounds. I was not afraid to muck it up in front of the net.”
Evans said he'd come out to work on his game 30 minutes before his teammates, and his work ethic set an example for the rest of the Yellowjackets. “Perfect practice makes perfect. If you don't do it right with intensity you're not going to get better at it,” he said.
Evans grew up in Dallas before leaving to attend a prep school, Trinity Pawling in Oneonta, N.Y., where he could play hockey. From there, he moved to the U.S. Hockey League, which he described as a training ground for future collegians and professionals...See the Wednesday print edition of the Fauquier Times-Democrat for the complete story.
