 Madison Crescent Starbucks to close

The Madison Crescent Starbucks will be closing soon.

The Seattle-based coffee giant announced at the beginning of the month that some 600 stores would be closing in the coming months. The first list of hits was released several days later and did not include any Virginia stores.

However, late last week, an updated list was released that included the Starbucks at 8006 Crescent Park Drive in Gainesville’s Madison Crescent development. It is the only Northern Virginia store affected so far, although the closure list also includes stores in Fredericksburg, Hampton, Newport News and Winchester.

Aubrey Davis, a spokesperson for Starbucks, said Monday that the company could not confirm the exact date that the store would close and did not say specifically why the Madison Crescent store was chosen.

"The stores identified for closure are spread across all major U.S. markets with approximately 70 percent of them opened since fiscal 2006,” she said in a written statement. “Some of our newer stores have not been able to meet the financial and operational objectives that we have set after they were opened, due to a variety of factors."

Davis said Starbucks would try to shift the Madison Crescent employees to jobs in other nearby stores. Those partners who are not offered a comparable position within a reasonable distance of their current location will be offered a severance package to aid in their transition, she said, adding that both full- and part-time workers will be eligible for severance.
