School Division announces summer hours

Again this year, in an effort to save thousands of dollars in utility costs, Fauquier County Public Schools will institute a mandatory four-day work week for employees who work during the summer.

June 23 through Aug. 7, employees will work on an extended-day schedule Monday through Thursday, and all FCPS school buildings, including the School Board Office, will be closed on Fridays. Office hours will be 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Please note that since the Fourth of July falls on Friday, when offices are closed, July 3 will be a holiday for FCPS employees who work during the summer.

The final four-day work week will be the week beginning Aug. 11. However, that four-day work week will be Tuesday, Aug. 12, through Friday, Aug. 15, which results in employees' having a four-day weekend, Aug. 8-11. New teachers report on Friday, Aug. 15.

Local students win Congressional awards

On Thursday, June 19, Emily Rinker of Bealeton, Alexander Smith of Sumerduck, and Bethany Klicka of Warrenton were recently awarded the Congressional Award Gold Medal, Congress' highest honor for youth service.

They were three of 237 students nationwide recognized with Congress' only award for youth.

Since its inception in 1979, the Congressional Award has recognized thousands of young Americans committed to serving their country and improving themselves, representing over 2.5 million hours of public service.

To register to earn The Congressional Award, call (888) 80-AWARD or visit www.congressionalaward.org.

The Congressional Award, a public-private partnership, established by Congress in 1979 under Public Law 96-114, is a non-competitive program open to young people ages 14-23, regardless of mental or physical challenges, or socioeconomic status. The Congressional Award Foundation teaches participants to set and achieve personally challenging goals that build character, and foster community service, personal development, and citizenship.
