Middleburg Baptist Church

Located at 209 East Federal Street in Middleburg, Middleburg Baptist Church was established in 1847 and has met continuously in the original "Free Church" building it occupies.

The historic Free Church was built in 1840 to serve the Methodist, Episcopal and Presbyterian congregations. The Baptists acquired the church for their sole use in 1954, after the other congregations had built churches of their own.

Since 1976, this Free Church heritage is celebrated by a combined worship service hosted by the Middleburg Baptist Church. This service usually takes place on a Sunday morning in June.

In 1959, an education wing was added to accommodate the church's educational ministry.

The pastor of the Middleburg Baptist Church is Dr. Bill Thigpen of Middleburg, who came to the church in January 1993. Thigpen earned his master's degree in divinity from the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C., and earned his doctorate from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky.

About 100 people participate in the church's Sunday School and worship service each week.

Sunday services include Bible study for all age groups, beginning at 9:45 a.m., followed by morning worship at 11 a.m.

The sanctuary choir rehearses at 8 p.m. Wednesdays under the direction of John Herndon.

The JOY Club, a monthly ministry for senior adults, holds a luncheon and program eight months of the year on the first Thursday at noon.

Special studies and events, youth and children activities, recreational and social gatherings, missions and ministry opportunities take place throughout the year, offering opportunities for spiritual growth and for nurturing relationships within the congregation.

In addition, the church and community host Middleburg Christian School, a ministry for older preschoolers that meets four mornings a week under the leadership of Mrs. Bryan Wright.

For information about the church and any of its ministries or programs, call (540) 687-5222 or fax (540) 687-5512. The mailing address is PO Box 311, Middleburg VA 20118.
