Catlett This Week: CCC Ruritan golf tournament set
The county fair has always been a special part of American history. I remember as a girl we would go as a family and take in everything. My mom liked the animals, so that would be our starting place. Then, on to the rides and maybe a sideshow.
Of course, entering a sideshow completely depended on what Momma thought best for us.
Then we would end up at the gate, where my dad was taking the entrance fee. To a little girl, there was always so much to do and see at the fair. Finally, I was able to go in the evening with girlfriends and without Momma, as long as my brothers stayed in sight of me.
I was never much on rides. The merry-go-round was great, and still is when I can find one. As I got a little older, the Ferris wheel was my favorite. I could see all over the fairgrounds and beyond when it would stop on top.
I am always thrilled to see our children work hard all year and enter their interests in the fair for judging. I have a few winners from our county fair this week and will have more next week.
Jill Rodgers entered her bunny rabbit and won Best in Show. She also placed first in the dress-up division. Wesley Miller entered the watermelon seed-spitting contest and won a ribbon. Zach and Zane Woodward placed very well this year, winning nine awards.
Mary Keith Russell accompanied her sister, Nancy Kochli, to Slovenia for the wedding of Nancy's son Andrew to Martina Rezar. They were there a few days early to help with all those last-minute details. The rest of the family joined them for the wedding on July 5. The couple was married in the beautiful Bled Castle. Mary Keith said the plane trip was good and the country beautiful. Congratulations to all and may there be many happy days ahead for the young couple.
Mary Catherine and Tom Samuel enjoyed an anniversary trip last Saturday, taking the Western Maryland Steam Train from Cumberland, Md., to Frostburg, Md. Their anniversary was July 10. They topped it off with a delightful dinner together that evening.

I don't mention every week our list to pray for, but I never forget. We all have our church bulletins and our own lists of family and friends. Remember to pray for those in authority, also.
