Anders Oster, meet Ozzie Smith
Once every game, No. 9 hitter Anders Oster likes to tap a ball down the third baseline and try to leg out a bunt single.
Not even the allure of hitting consecutive home runs was cause to abandon that commitment Tuesday in the Fauquier Gators' 9-2 victory over Winchester.
Oster, who had only 12 hits in 82 at bats (.142 average) entering the game, hit a solo home run in the second inning to give the Gators a 3-1 lead, but then opted to bunt for an infield single in his next at bat in the fourth inning.
“It doesn’t surprise me,” Fauquier coach Paul Koch said. “That’s his game.”
“I was hoping that would catch them off guard,” Oster said.
It certainly did, and after reaching via bunt, the 5-foot-11, 190-pound shortstop scored as part of the four-run fourth inning that expanded Fauquier’s lead to 8-2. He finished the game 2-for-4, giving him five hits in his last 12 at bats during as a Fauquier winning streak extended to four games with Tuesday’s win.
“It feels a lot better when you’re hitting then when you’re not,” Oster said. “It’s nice to have a few good games here and there.”
Oster isn’t the only Gator with a hot bat of late. After struggling to produce offense much of the season, Fauquier (15-8) has amassed 73 hits and 46 runs in its last seven games, helping it hold onto second place in the Valley Baseball League North Division behind Luray (17-8) and above Winchester (14-11)...
