Hawks advance to third straight title game

There were moments in Friday's VIS Division II semifinal when Highland's quest for a third consecutive title game trip looked to be in jeopardy. But like the veteran, experienced group that they are, the Hawks found a way through them.

Highland pulled away from Virginia Episcopal School late for a 49-38 win - setting up yet another rematch with Walsingham Academy, the team that has beaten Highland in the last two state finals.

The Hawks struggled at times on Friday, with just three players scoring in the first 28 minutes of action. Junior Maire Shaughnessy led the way with 15 points and seven rebounds. Denae Davis scored 14 in the first half as Highland took a 24-15 halftime lead, and finished with 16 total. Hannah Safren added 11 points, including a pair of clutch second-half 3-pointers to help Highland fend off VES.

Outside of that, only guard Ella Miller found the scoresheet. She buried a trifecta to put Highland ahead 38-30 at the four-minute mark and added a pair of free throws late.

The Highland-Walsingham showdown tips at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon at Paul VI Catholic School.

Check back soon for more from Friday's game, including postgame audio from Shaughnessy and Highland coach Donald O'Meara.
