Another year, another title shot for Highland girls

This is all getting pretty old hat for the Highland School girls basketball team. Win the DAC regular season title, win the DAC tournament title, head to the Virginia Independent Schools Final Four.

For the fourth consecutive season, Highland has followed that script, take the last step with a 56-29 home quarterfinal win over No. 10 Hampton Christian on Monday. The second-seeded Hawks will take on the winner of Monday night's Seton-Virginia Episocpal game.

Highland has not been able to reach the pinnacle during its remarkable four-year run - the Hawks lost in the Division II semifinals four years ago, and in the finals to current-No. 1 Walsingham the past two seasons.

Monday was just another ho-hum quarterfinal win. The Hawks led 14-2 after one quarter, thanks to a long 3-pointer by Shondi Josephs and a late Erin Whitney fast break layup. The lead pushed to 30-9 at halftime and 42-16 after three.

Tomorrow's semifinal game starts at approximately 1:30 p.m. at Paul VI Catholic School in Fairfax. Despite the mid-afternoon tip, Highland should have a large crowd on hand. The school plans to send a "pep bus" packed full of students to the game.

Elsewhere, Wakefield's Division III tournament run came to an end. The Owls dropped a 62-44 decision at No. 2 Stonebridge School on Thursday.
