Highland, Wakefield will meet in boys DAC final
The Highland and Wakefield boys each scrapped out victories on Saturday night, setting up a showdown in the Delaney Athletic Conference Tournament final.
Highland used a strong second half to down Randolph-Macon Academy, while Wakefield outlasted Tandem Friends. The rivals will meet for the conference title at 6 p.m. on Monday. One twist to the storyline: The Virginia Independent Schools version of Selection Sunday occurs tomorrow - meaning that Highland and Wakefield will find out if either school snuck into the state playoffs, which begin Tuesday, before the tournament conclusion.
A similarly anxious Sunday awaits the Wakefield girls, who fell to Tandem Friends in Saturday's semis. Wakefield was ranked No. 8 in the VIS Division III; the top 10 schools make the state tournament, so tomorrow's final poll will be critical for the Fighting Owls.
The Highland girls have a lot less to worry about. The Hawks rolled past Wakefield Country Day on Thursday, advancing to take on Tandem Friends on Monday at 4 p.m. Highland will receive a bye in next week's VIS Division II first round, and will open play at home on Thursday.
