Valley stuns Liberty girls in Allen's finale

The Liberty girls basketball season came to a surprising end on Friday night, as the Eagles dropped a 47-37 decision to Loudoun Valley in the Cedar Run District quarterfinals. LHS entered the postseason as the district's No. 2 seed, but ends the season short of a regional berth.

Liberty trailed 23-19 at halftime, but rallied in the third to grab a 28-27 lead heading to the final eight minutes. Valley controlled the final frame, though, posting a 20-9 points advantage. Jazmon Gwathmey tried to save the Eagles, scoring 19 points, but was unable to carry LHS to victory.

Just over two weeks ago, Valley headed into Bealeton and upset Liberty 42-37, a foreshadowing of Friday night's shocker.

The loss marks the end of head coach Ellen Allen's Liberty career. Allen will take a position at the new Kettle Run High School next year.
