Highland stuns undefeated James Monroe
In case anyone hadn't noticed, the Highland girls basketball team is rolling. James Monroe got that very memo on Monday's evening.
Monroe, a Group AA public school, entered Warrenton 17-0 on the season - a mark that included a 54-48 win over Highland earlier this season. The Yellow Jackets left devastated, the victims of a 50-47 upset loss to the Hawks.
"We wanted this one bad," Highland junior Shendi Josephs said. "We shouldn't have lost to them the first time."
Highland trailed by one at halftime, but rallied to take a 42-39 lead into the final frame. A back-and-forth final quarter led to the Hawks clinging to a 48-47 lead with 1:45 left. The Hawks then ran 90 seconds off the clock before Ella Miller drained a pair of free throws. Monroe's final chance to tie, a 3-pointer from the high arc, landed long and wide left, setting off an excited celebration by Highland.
The Hawks have now won 10 straight games and are 18-7 overall.
