Perks' record-setting day not good enough
Caitlin Perks broke two Virginia state records at Saturday's Group AAA final hosted by George Mason University. Unfortunately, that stellar performance was not enough to net the Fauquier senior a title.
Perks swam a 1:49.99 in the 200-yard freestyle - besting the previous state mark of 1:50.18, but not topping Becca Jones of First Colonia, who finished in 1:48.45.
A similarly cruel fate awaited Perks in the 100-yard freestyle later in the day. Perks set the state mark in that event in Friday's prelims with a time of 51.26 seconds. The future Tennessee Vol then posted a 50.95 in Saturday's final. Once again, a state record time was not enough: Amanda Kendall of Robinson High clocked in at 50.76 seconds, dropping Perks to second for a second time.
Liberty's Jake Lucas also competed in two of Saturday's final: the 50 free and 100 butterfly. Lucas came in seventh in the exciting 50 free at 21.89 seconds, a little more than half a second off the winning pace from Geoff Bobsin of Robinson.
Lucas had a shot at the 100 butterfly title, but wound up third in 50.11 seconds. Sean Fletcher from Madison won in 48.97, one of several state record times posted by the field on the day.
