Wakefield boys drub Australian team, 57-31

Wakefield School’s opening boys basketball game in its own Life and Breath Showcase tournament was a stark contrast to last year's. Let’s put it this way: Knox Prep’s “B” team was no Montrose Christian.

Journeying some 9,700 miles from Sydney, Australia, the Knox kids could shoot jumpers and run the floor, but were light years in talent behind Montrose, a Rockville, Md., power that steamrolled the Owls last year.

As opposed to last year’s 90-31 loss to Montrose, Wakefield rolled to a 57-31 victory over the Aussies, as Jeff Byrd scored 24 points and Eric Wilson added 10.

“We thought it would be unique to play a team from Australia. We can play Montrose again, but we wanted to take the opportunity to play a team from another country,” said Wakefield coach Scott Barron.

Suffice it to say this game required no buzzer-beating heroics.

Thanks to a flurry of inside baskets by Byrd, Wakefield led 37-9 at halftime. Byrd added three quick hoops to open the second half, as the rout continued.

“We wanted to come out and represent our country well,” said Byrd...
