Gainesville Presbyterian Church

Founded in 1980, Gainesville Presbyterian Church is a Christ-centered and Bible-based congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America, a Reformed, evangelical, and Bible-believing denomination formed in 1973.

The congregation first met at the Gainesville Elementary School, and three years later moved to its present building at 16127 Lee Highway (U.S. 29), south of Gainesville.

Pastor Jack Lash, who has been at GPC since 1982, expounds the Scriptures each week, encouraging the people in the grace of God and urging them to live lives consistent with the Bible's promises and commands.

Sunday schedule: 10 a.m., worship service; 11:15 a.m., break with coffee or tea and a light snack; 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Sunday School for all ages.

GPC is a church filled with children, so there are Sunday School classes for all ages, from adults down to age two. A nursery is provided for ages two and under during both the worship service and Sunday School. There is also a children's sermon downstairs during the sermon portion of the worship service.

During the week, there are various small groups and Bible studies which meet, as well as twice a month on Sunday afternoons; a middle-through-high-school Parent and Youth Fellowship meets monthly on Fridays; a High Bible study and fellowship meets Sunday evenings at 6:30 p.m. at various locations; and a college group meets on Wednesday evenings.

GPC also hosts an ESL (English as a Second Language) class from 7-9 p.m. Mondays.

The church is the sponsor of the Loving Instruction For Eternity homeschool support ministry. LIFE offers Homeschool Co-op classes twice a week during the school year. There are a variety of other LIFE programs, including a homeschool graduation ceremony held the first Friday in June. Judy Trudeau is the LIFE secretary. For more information, e-mail life@gpchurch.net or check out www.gpchurch.net and click on "Homeschool Support."

Thanksgiving Eve, Christmas Eve, and Good Friday services are held at 7:15 p.m., followed by fellowship and refreshments. A special musicale, showcasing the musical and dramatic talents of the members, is held in lieu of Sunday School on the Sunday nearest Christmas and on Easter Sunday. There is also an Easter Sunrise Service with a breakfast following.

On the first Sunday of each month, in lieu of Sunday School, a SongFeast is held, when members learn new hymns and praise songs, or a Family Meeting is convened, when topics of general interest to the congregation are explored. In each case, a potluck lunch and time of fellowship follow.
