Liberty volleyball squad goes 3-1 in opening tournament
As good as Liberty looked on the volleyball court last Saturday during a four-match tournament in Orange, it appeared even better on paper.
Liberty co-coaches Theresa Gore and Kevin Mozingo thought serving was a relative weakness as they watched the season-opening tournament, in which the Eagles went 3-1 to finish third out of eight teams. But they found the Eagles’ serve was actually strong upon reading their statistics sheet at day’s end.
The Eagles finished the tournament with a service percentage of 86 and twice ran off service streaks of at least 12 consecutive points.
As a result, Liberty began the day with wins over Charlottesville, 25-20, 25-3, and Fort Defiance, 25-22, 25-19, before losing to Louisa County, 25-16, 9-25, 15-13.
It then finished the day by beating Monticello, 25-8, 20-25, 15-11, in the third/fourth-place match.
Although solid, perhaps serving was a scapegoat because it may have cost the Eagles a tournament title. Against Louisa, the eventual tournament champion, Liberty dominated the second game and fell just short in game three.
“If we didn’t have miss-serves in that third game we probably would have won and finished first,” Gore said. “We should have won that match...”
