Aug. 22: Teachers Work Day

Aug. 25: First day of school for students

Sept. 1: Labor Day holiday

Immunization required for sixth graders

Parents and guardians are reminded that all sixth-grade students are required by law to have a tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis booster vaccination (Tdap). The booster dose of Tdap is required if at least five years have passed since the last dose.

Sixth-grade students in Fauquier County Public Schools will not be allowed to begin school for the 2008-2009 school year until this booster vaccination is received and proof of immunization has been presented to the school.

Vaccinations may be obtained at a physician's office, military clinic, or at the Fauquier Health Department, (540) 347-6400.

Background checks for school volunteers scheduled

All individuals who volunteer in Fauquier County Public Schools must first undergo and pass a criminal and Department of Social Services/Child Protective Services Central Registry background check.

During most of the year, potential volunteers must report to the Fauquier County Human Resources Department at 320 Hospital Drive, Suite 34 in Warrenton between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to complete the background check.

However, for three days this August, those who want to volunteer at any Fauquier County Public School may get the background check done at one of the county's high schools at the scheduled time and place listed below. In addition, the Human Resources Department will have extended hours of 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, through Wednesday, Sept. 10, with the hours of 4:30-7 p.m. devoted solely to volunteer fingerprinting all three days.

Volunteers will need to bring a picture ID, as the paperwork requires a notary signature. Notaries will be at each session. Volunteers should come prepared with the full name, including full birth middle name, maiden name and date of birth of their spouse/ex-spouse(s) and of all of their children. They will also be asked to provide, to the best of their knowledge, their addresses for the past 10 years and the approximate dates that they lived at those addresses.

Any questions should be addressed to the Fauquier County Human Resources Department, (540) 428-8700.

The dates, times and places for background checks are as follows:

Sept. 8-10, 8 a.m.-7 p.m., Human Resources Department

Student fees stable for SY 2008-09

There will be no increase in student fees for school year 2008-2009 in Fauquier County Public Schools; fees will be the same as last year's.

"These are challenging times for everyone," Dr. Jonathan Lewis, division superintendent, told the Fauquier County School Board at its July 14 meeting. "We have made an effort to keep costs at a minimum."

Fees are as follows:

• Consumable material fees are $12 for grades K-5, $20 for grades 6-8, and $25 for grades 9-12.

• Rental fees for musical instruments are $40.

• Driver education fees (behind-the-wheel training) are $338.

• Parking fees are $100 annually.

Activity fees (student participation in an interscholastic sport or in marching band) are $25 per student per season, not to exceed $100 per family per school year.

Additional fees are incurred for gym uniforms, art and photography materials, and career and technical education consumable materials. Additional information is available at the schools.

Fees are waived for students receiving free or reduced lunch. Fees may be paid in person at the school or by mail. Contact specific schools for further information or visit each school's Web site through the school division's home page at www.fcps1.org.
