Mount Horeb United Methodist Church

Connect. Create. Communicate. This the mission of Mount Horeb United Methodist Church, a church located in Bristersburg, just east of Catlett, off Route 28.

Since its beginnings in the 1800s, the church always belonged to a multiple-church charge served by a single pastor. In July 2007, Mount Horeb became a "station church" with its own pastor and a newly defined mission in the community. While the church continued to hold some of its regular events, the one-church, one-pastor team sought to meet its Christian mission in new ways.

First, Mount Horeb United Methodist Church is a connecting church. Connections are made by blending its rich tradition with relevant sermon topics and congregational involvement during worship. People are connected with others through small groups of women, men, youth, and children.

Second, Mount Horeb is a creating church. Just as Matthew 28:19-20 says to "go and make disciples," the church seeks to create disciples through Bible studies, book studies, training workshops and programs like Alpha.

Alpha is a 13-week course which focuses on the basics of Christianity told through the experience of everyday people and where food and fellowship always abound. The church's first Alpha program this year was so successful, it spun off a Youth Alpha retreat weekend for youth age 13-18.

Communicating the gospel message in a real and practical way is the goal of the church's third mission component. In addition to worship, studies, and small groups, Mount Horeb communicates God's message of love through its community breakfast offered every second Saturday morning, its various outreach activities both locally (Relay for Life, Clara's Pantry, etc.) and globally (supporting health and educational opportunities across the world, supporting a missionary in Latin America, etc.). This year, Mount Horeb also joined the Angel Food Ministries network that provides quality food at low prices for all families and can be purchased with cash or food stamps.

While the congregation at Mount Horeb is reaching out to the world, they do so standing on the foundation laid years ago. The first church building was erected about 1848 on property donated by Mr. and Mrs. Thomas W. Cowne.

In 1892, a new church was erected on a site near Bristersburg, donated by Mr. and Mrs. J.H. George.

In 1927, another church building was erected on that site and served the membership until November 1966, when the congregation moved to the church's current location on Elk Run Road.

Services are 10 a.m., and preceded at 9 a.m. by Sunday School for all ages. Beginning July 1, services are led by the Rev. Mary Ann Buscher. Nursery is available for infants and children up to 5 years of age.
