In Bealeton, a holding pattern as injuries heal
Liberty holds its first football scrimmage Friday at Gar-Field (Dale City), and Eagle coach Tommy Buzzo is already issuing a cautionary warning: don’t be too quick to judge us.
Things are coming into focus as far as a starting lineup, but Buzzo says nagging injuries will prevent many key players from participating, and Friday's lineup may look nothing like Opening Night
“It’s nothing very serious, but it’s possible 15 or 20 kids will not be cleared by Friday,” said Buzzo. “We will be several starters down.” Most of the injuries are muscle-related, Buzzo said.
But like any demanding coach — and Buzzo qualifies — he wants to see his first team squad gel as soon as possible. Liberty hosts Massasponax on Aug. 22 in a home scrimmage (benefit game). The season opener is Aug. 29 at Kettle Run.
Nick Potts is almost certain to be the starting quarterback this season, taking over for graduated Wayne Conner. Potts played sparingly last year, but knows the offense well.
The offense, however, will be tweaked since Conner was only 5-foot-10 and mobile, while Potts is 6-4 and will not be asked to run the ball. “Nick is different. He’s an intelligent kid who is getting much better every day with his pass reads,” said Buzzo.
As usual, running back appears to be an area of strength, with Damien Dodson slated to play fullback and Corey Lillard lining up as tailback...
