FHS' Hurst named state wrestling coach of the year
Forgive the National Wrestling Coaches Association if it seems short-sighted in naming Fauquier High's Bryan Hurst the Virginia Coach of the Year for the 2007-08 season.
The NWCA doesn't hand out Coach of the Decade awards.
It's taken almost 10 years of work for Hurst to build the Fauquier program into a contender, and the NWCA rightfully acknowledged Hurst's effort after the Falcons finished third at last season's Group AAA state tournament. But Hurst's wrestlers have long known the ninth-year coach to be a top-notch leader.
“Coach Hurst has done incredible things for this program,” 130-pound FHS wrestler David Yost said during the state tournament. “Every year it’s gotten better and better. He’s done things people never thought we would do.”
In 2007-08, the Falcons set school records by climbing to a No. 2 state ranking, qualifying 10 wrestlers for the Group AAA state tournament and ultimately finishing third. Fauquier was also the Northwest Region tournament runner-up and Cedar Run District champion for a third consecutive season.
Most agree all that success began with Hurst's commitment.
“The amount of work he puts in and the hours he puts in — he’s built this wrestling program from the ground up," FHS athletic director Allen Creasy said. "He’s started a youth program that serves all the high schools in the county and he started a middle school program. He pushed for all that...We’re very proud of him and the time he puts in."
Like every accolade earned by the Fauquier program, Hurst sees his Coach of the Year award as another building block.
“It’s exciting. You work real hard and it’s always nice to hear good things, but it’s also good for the program," Hurst said. "I just want to work as hard as I can to get this program to next level and if by doing that I get recognition, that’s great..."See the Wednesday print edition of the Fauquier Times-Democrat for the complete story.
