Fauquier's Scott: 'The decisions are mine now'
Fauquier High's first week of football practice has done more than loosen up players for an anticipated 2008 season, it has given new head coach Mark Scott a chance to stretch his vocal cords.
The Falcons began two-a-day practices last Monday, returning to the field for the first time since finishing last season with an 8-3 record and a Group AAA playoff berth and looking decidedly different.
The 29-year-old Scott has replaced Greg Hatfield as head coach after serving as the offensive coordinator in years past. Now he's the guy standing in the middle of 60-plus players when practice begins and before it ends.
“The big thing for me is I just have a more vocal role. The decisions are mine now. The guys are looking to me for answers," Scott said. "It’s been fun and I’ve enjoyed it."
Scott hasn't changed much schematically — Fauquier will basically run the same spread offense it has the last three seasons — but the coaches installing and explaining those schemes are different.
Aside from Hatfield, gone are co-defensive coordinators Rob Ayres and Ron Watkins — a head coach applicant following Hatfield's departure — as well as some coaches at the lower levels of the FHS program.
On the varsity, Ryan Bailey has moved up to defensive coordinator and Jamie Carter is again the offensive/defensive line coach. Jason Bailey, who came on as a volunteer late last season, is now the defensive backs/wide receivers coach while Greg Womack and Dave Byrd are the new running backs/linebackers coaches.
Meanwhile, Scott will continue to call Fauquier's plays this season, giving him a dual role as head coach and offensive coordinator.
"It’s definitely going to be a challenge, especially since...I prefer calling plays from the booth. But our circumstances don’t allow us to do that," said Scott, who will call plays from the field. "It’s not going to be something we can’t overcome. We’re going to have guys in the booth I trust to be my eyes..."
