Grant will aid healthy-baby initiatives

A March of Dimes grant recently secured by the Rappahannock-Rapidan Health District, Fauquier Health System and Culpeper Regional Hospital will provide more than $19,000 in funding for healthy baby programs in several counties, including Fauquier.

The programs will specifically focus on preventing Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), preventing pre-term labor and low birth weights, and increasing folic acid consumption by women of child-bearing age.

SIDS is the leading cause of death among infants aged one month to one year, but it can be prevented.

"In the past, SIDS has always been a mysterious taker of newborns," said Deborah Fischetti, a neonatal nurse practitioner at Fauquier Hospital. "But there are steps that can be taken to prevent it."

See the Fauquier Times-Democrat for the complete story...
