Blows exchanged in FHS-Culpeper girls soccer match
Add another chapter to the ever-heated rivalry between Culpeper and Fauquier.
A late skirmish marred the end of Friday's Blue Devil-Falcon girls soccer match, won by FHS, 3-0.
In the waning seconds, Culpeper's Mandy Martell became entangled with a Fauquier defender, sending both tumbling. Martell rose first and stood over the FHS player, holding her down briefly.
Falcon Ashleigh Scott raced over and confronted Martell. The two exchanged blows, resulting in matching red cards and subsequent two-game suspensions.
"That's the Culpeper-Fauquier rivalry," FHS coach Greg McLeod said.
Devin Locklin scored twice for Fauquier and Sara Heflin added a goal for the Falcons (3-4-3), who turned a 0-0 halftime tie into the three-goal victory.
But the late tiff overshadowed the game, and cost each team an important player...
See the Wednesday print edition of the Fauquier Times-Democrat for the complete story.

I was disappointed to read of this incident on line and in the newspaper. It certainly tarnished your journalistic integrity. I don't ever remember reading about any other fights at local high school sporting events. It seems as if you were riding on the coat tail of the teenage girls in Florida who posted their "beatdown" on You-Tube.
According to people at the game the Fauquier player was not held down by the Culpeper player standing over her but rather the Culpeper players knee drop to her stomach. This certainly is not aggressive play as stated by the Culpeper coach.
I don't condone fighting but I admire Ashleigh for standing up for her team mate and letting a bully know that enough is enough!
