Apparent anthrax scare reported

An apparent anthrax scare at Lord Fairfax Community College turned out to be unfounded, police said.

A security guard found a jacket and envelope, which apparently had the word "anthrax" on it in a building, late Monday night, police said. The envelope reportedly contained a white powder.

Fire and rescue personnel, including hazardous materials teams from Warrenton (Co. 1) and the Warrenton Training Center (Co. 19) responded to the school, which is located just south of Warrenton. Fauquier County deputies also responded to the call.

An investigation determined that the substance was actually powdered sugar, police said.

The matter will be turned over to the Criminal Investigations Division of the Fauquier County Sheriff's Office for further investigation.
