Turner Ashby sweeps Highland
Turner Ashby took both games of a softball double-header with Highland on Saturday afternoon, prompting Hawks coach Donald O'Meara to call the Knights "Maybe the best team we've faced in three years."
Whether or not Highland has run into a better squad in its brief softball history, Turner Ashby was certainly the best team Saturday. The Knights won the opener 8-4 and the nightcap 2-0.
Highland took a 1-0 lead in the first game, thanks to a third inning homer by Maire Shaughnessy.
"I was joking with her that it was a mistake, we woke them up," O'Meara said. "In the bottom of third, we just imploded."
That's when the Hawks coughed up a couple of hits, and added a couple of errors, as Turner Ashby took the lead for good.
O'Meara turned the circle over to freshman Wesley Bowers in the second game, her first pitching appearance of the season. She pitched three shutout innings, then handed the ball to Shaughnessy - the game one starter. Turner Ashby scratched across two runs off Shaughnessy, and the Hawks could not answer.
"We had runners in scoring position, we just couldn't get them in," O'Meara said.
The Hawks (4-5 overall) return to action on Monday at Robinson Secondary.
