Man o'War lecture at NSL

Dorothy Ours will deliver a lecture on “Man o’War Revisited” at the National Sporting Library on Thursday, April 3 at 7 p.m. A book signing will follow the lecture.

Ours is the author of "Man o’War: A Legend Like Lightning," published by St. Martin’s Press in 2006. Ours’ book chronicles the racing exploits of Man o’War during the 1919-1920 racing seasons. Man o’War won 20 of 21 lifetime starts, broke many American and world records, and is still considered one of the greatest racehorses of all time.

Carriage day at Morven Park

Call for WEG volunteers

The 2010 World Equestrian Games will be held at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Ky. Several thousand volunteers are needed to help run the event, which includes championships in eight different equestrian sports. Help is needed before, during and after the games.

The WEG have never been held outside Europe, nor have all eight international disciplines been held at a single site before. More than 600,000 spectators are expected to attend the 16-day event.

ODHPC shows return

The Old Dominion Hounds Pony Club will host a series of dressage shows and combined tests at Windsor Lodge Farm in Flint Hill.

Dates are May 18, June 15, July 20, Sept. 14, Oct. 5 and Nov. 16.

Dressage tests from intro to second level are offered, and combined tests are from first timers to training. In the show jumping phase, competitors have a choice of doing all show fences or adding a series of cross-country jumps for a "jumping derby" style division.

BBHSA series returns

The Back to Basics Horse Show Association will host a series of shows at Lucky Drive Ranch in Catlett. English show dates are April 20, May 17, June 22, July 19, Sept. 14 and Oct. 18. Frank Bell clinic in April

Trainer Frank Bell will teach a "gentle solutions" clinic April 19 and 20 at Moonraker in Catlett from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. 'Chasing on TV

Major American steeplechase races will be part of the Thoroughbred racing broadcasts on ESPN and espn.com this year. The schedule includes six "Steeplechase Reports" on ESPN and ESPN2 television networks, plus coverage on the Horse Racing section of espn.com.

The March 29 Carolina Cup will be part of the Arkansas Derby show on ESPN from 5:30-7 p.m. on April 12. The April 12 Georgia Cup airs April 19 on ESPN2 from 5-6 p.m. during the Lexington Stakes show. The April 17 Royal Chase airs May 1 on ESPN2 as part of the 4:30-5:30 p.m. Triple Crown special show. The May 10 Iroquois Stakes airs June 7 on ESPN from 3:30-6 p.m. as part of the Belmont special. The Aug. 7 A.P. Smithwick airs Aug. 23 during the Travers show on ESPN.

Are you prepared?

A series of "farm emergency preparedness" seminars will be held next month in Front Royal. The Virginia Cooperative Extension, in cooperation with local fire and rescue departments and with support from the Frederick County Virginia Equine Network, is hosting a three-part series in May to help area horsemen prepare for a host of equine emergencies.

On May 6 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Valley Farm Credit, the lecture is about preventing barn fires.

The May 13 lecture will discuss horse behavior in emergencies, first aid and "go kits" for evacuation.

The May 20 lecture, at Wagon Wheel Ranch, will be a "how-to" course on barn evacuation and fire extinguisher training.

Retraining Thoroughbreds

The local Thoroughbred Network will host a "trainer's seminar" Saturday, April 5 from 12-2 p.m. at the Warrenton Community Center. The seminar features local horsewomen Andrea Martens, Maryalice Matheson and Liz Millikin, who will discuss issues related to choosing and retraining an off-track Thoroughbred and taking questions from the audience.

Graves Mountain ride

A three-day ride and clinic will be held at Graves Mountain Lodge in Syria May 2-4. Trainers Charles and Michele Pellham will teach, meals are offered at the lodge, and there is a Saturday night dance and Cowboy Church Sunday morning.

Cinnamon Ridge shows

Cinnamon Ridge Farm in Amissville will host two Battlefield and Virginia Horse Shows Association show series.

A schooling show series (May 3, June 7, July 12, Aug. 16, Sept. 6 and Oct. 11) has "easier courses, more relaxed requirements, lower entry fees and is geared toward the casual and beginning first-time show riders," said owner Kathi Fillmore.

A hunter show series (May 17, June 21, July 26, Aug. 23, Sept. 20 and Oct. 25) is "geared toward the competitive rider and trainer, offering great year-end prizes and a fantastic grand-prize trip for high score and reserve trainers," Fillmore said.

New at the Bull Run races

The May 4 Bull Run Hunt Point-to-Point will offer a "western tack flat race" for adults on any type of horse under western tack. The race is 1/2 mile. A mule race is over a quarter mile, and a hunt team relay has also been carded: it is for teams of four, passing a baton every quarter mile of the mile-long race.

Arabian shows slated

The Virginia Arabian Horse Association will host two big shows this year. The Arabian Sport Horse and Dressage Show is April 18-20 at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington. The VAHA show and futurity is June 6-8 at Commonwealth Park in Culpeper.

At the June show, photographer Johnnie Johnston will present a seminar on horse photography and autograph copies of his book.

Aiden O'Connell to teach

Irish jockey and foxhunter Aiden O'Connell will conduct a cross-country jumping clinic April 19-20 at Mosby Spring Farm in Middleburg. Sessions are open for all levels of horse and rider, and auditors are welcome to attend free. Details are at (540) 687-6016.


TTEAM clinic next month

Horse trainer and behaviorist Linda Tellington-Jones, founder of TTEAM TTouch will present a five-day horse training clinic April 30-May 4 in Middleburg at Brookhill Farm. She will also give an evening demonstration Friday, May 2 at Sunny’s Corner Farm at Takaro in Middleburg from 7 to 9 p.m.

Mackay-Smith a finalist

Pfizer Animal Health and the American Horse Publications have selected winners of the 2008 Equine Industry Vision Award. The award is intended to recognize innovation, leadership and service.

Finalists include Clarke County veterinarian Dr. Matthew Mackay-Smith, whose father Alexander won the first Vision award in 2002. Other finalists are Dr. Marvin Beeman, Charlotte Brailey Kneeland, the Louisiana State University equine studies program, Sally Swift and Linda Tellington-Jones.


Therapeutic benefit April 21

The inaugural Golden Dreams Therapeutic Riding Center benefit golf tournament is set April 21 at the Dominion Valley Country Club in Haymarket.
