Severson to ride at Hong Kong

A Virginia rider will take part in a "test" event at the Beas River Olympic Equestrian Venue in preparation for the 2008 Olympics in Hong Kong. The test event will be held at the CCI** level Aug. 11-13.

Kim Severson of Scottsville will ride Plain Dealing Farm's Tsunami, while Pennsylvania native Buck Davidson, 30, will ride Ann Glaus and Cassandra Segal’s 7-year-old Irish Thoroughbred Ballynoecastle RM.

Olympic veteran Severson, 33, partners the 8-year-old Thoroughbred mare who most recently placed 10th in the Jersey Fresh CCI*** this spring.

Running a test event before an Olympic Games has become common, especially in places that are unaccustomed to running a CCI. The venue for the Olympics is being built at the Shatin Racecourse in Hong Kong and multiple countries from around the world have been invited to send horses.

Rappahannock Hunt updates

The Rappahannock Hunt trail ride slated Aug. 11 has been canceled due to a schedule conflict. The hunt club's foxhunting clinic date has also been shifted to Aug 19.

Just deux it

Leesburg's Morven Park Equestrian Center will host the Caroline Muldoon Pas de Deux challenge Aug. 18.

Pas de Deux (French for "dance of two") features pairs of riders performing a choreographed dressage test to music.

Competition will be from first level through grand prix.

The evening will begin with exhibition rides and a mounted demonstration of the movements featured in the competitive rides.

Patron level tickets, which include a buffet dinner and cocktail reception, are $150. General admission is $20. Kids under 12 are $5. There will be live music and dancing.

The Pas de Deux class is offered in conjunction with the Equestrian Event Management Summer Fling Dressage show, which runs at Morven Park the same day.

The class is offered in memory of Caroline Muldoon, a lifelong dressage enthusiast and horse sports supporter.

On Sunday, Aug. 19, the Loudoun Therapeutic Riding Foundation, which runs its program at Morven Park, will hold a horse show open to riders with disabilities. Classes include equitation, dressage and games. LTRF riders will also be among the demonstration rides Saturday night.

For more information on sponsorship, patron tickets or general admission, call (240) 731-2248 or log onto www.morvenpark.org.
