Water projects ongoing in east

Planning and construction are under way to bring much-needed water to parts of eastern Loudoun – Dulles South, Sterling Boulevard and Broad Run.

The Loudoun County Sanitation Authority has launched three projects: construction of water tanks in Dulles South, water main replacement on Sterling Boulevard, and construction of the Broad Run Water Reclamation Facility.

Dulles South

Planning for the water towers began in 2005, for construction of two tanks to store 6 million gallons of water for the communities of South Riding, Stone Ridge, Kirkpatrick Farms and other smaller surrounding developments.

The tanks, costing about $5 million each, will be on the western side of Stone Ridge just off Goshen Road.

The water will pull from the Loudoun County Sanitation Authority's water system.

LCSA has submitted plans to the county and has applied for a zoning permit. Once the permit is approved, LCSA will complete the final design. Groundbreaking is expected to begin sometime this year.

Sterling Boulevard

Three years ago, LCSA began replacing the 40-year-old, four-mile-long water main that runs the length of Sterling Boulevard. Installation began in March 2006.

Phase I, the installation of the 30-inch- and 24-inch-diameter water main from Route 7 to Holly Avenue, has been completed as well as replacements at Sterling Boulevard and Route 28, and Phase II design. LSCA will solicit construction bids on Phase II this year and says it hopes to begin construction work, south of Holly Avenue to the north side of Shaw Road, next year.

The project is on time, which is an accomplishment in itself, said LCSA community relations specialist Liza Young.

It's rare for a water and sewer project of this magnitude to be on schedule at this point in the construction schedule,” Young said.

Completion is expected at the end of 2008 and will total $12 million.

Broad Run

LCSA says it hopes to open in April 2008 the $200 million advanced wastewater treatment facility in Ashburn, which has been planned since 1975.

Approximately 89.8 percent is complete,” said Young.

The District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority, at the Blue Plains facility, treats 13 million gallons of wastewater a day for the area. According to Young, engineers did a study on growth and found that by 2008 the population will surpass this amount of needed water. The Broad Run facility will treat the overage.
