Crosstrails and economic development

Crosstrail: Town Council members will meet with representatives from the Loudoun Board of Supervisors and the Crosstrail Development team July 11 at 6 p.m. at the County Government Building to discuss the approval of residential building near Leesburg Executive Airport.

Economic development: The Town Council recently criticized the Economic Development Commission for not doing enough to boost development in Leesburg. At the May 29 council meeting, ccouncilman Kenneth Reid suggested the commission be disbanded because it was spending millions of dollars to bring business to the town with no results.

These comments were on many of the commission members' minds at their meeting June 20.

Sitting down with Todd Routz, a marketing consultant hired by the town to help develop an economic strategy, the commission focused on creating a marketing campaign that would distinguish Leesburg from the other D.C. suburban towns.

The town has an "educated workforce that leaves town every day," Routz said.

Commission member Todd Severance said keeping the workforce in town was difficult when there are no big corporations within the town limits.

"We have a mayor ... that has never believed in the annexation process," he said, "which has locked us into our boarders."

Leesburg doesn't have land on which to build as does Tysons Corner, Severance said.

The commission was also concerned with drawing a young workforce to replace the town's aging population.

The next EDC meeting is July 18 at 7 p.m.
