Brumfield student named Post Design Finalist
Despite having only a decade of life behind her, Claire Beaulieu beams a worldly perspective, one that is already manifesting in her artwork. The Brumfield Elementary fourth grader was one of 12 finalists chosen from a pool of 1,800 contestants in The Washington Post's kids Christmas wrapping-paper contest.Unlike many of the entries the Post received, Claire's was absent Christmas trees and Santa Clauses. Instead, she chose to represent the various ethnicities, cultures and religions of the world in her design, extending her welcome to a diverse range of people. Bundled up for winter weather, boys and girls of various heights, skin color, and facial features hold hands with each other and with snowmen. Despite differences, everyone in this snowy scene is linked by a smile.
Claire told a Post staffer that she had intentionally chosen a winter scene instead of a Christmas theme, because not everyone celebrates Christmas. She also told the interviewer that “she wanted it to be very colorful, because people dress differently and look differently,” Cathy said.
The designs of all 12 of the final contestants were pictured in the Friday, Dec. 21 Weekend section of the Post.
