Purcellville
Town wins award: Purcellville has received a 2007 Virginia Municipal League achievement award for local governments serving communities with a population of 5,000-10,000. The VML is a statewide nonprofit, nonpartisan association established in 1905 to improve and assist local governments through legislative advocacy, research and education. The membership includes 39 cities, 157 towns and 12 counties.
Purcellville's entry titled, “Engagement of our community youth by our Purcellville Police Department,” received the top award in its category.
VML judges said, “Purcellville recognized the social effects that its growth and changing demographics were having on the community [and] broke with more traditional community policy methods that focus on adults, instead choosing to target its priorities on youth programs. Purcellville deliberately set out to change its paradigm in a top-down strategy by seeking out new leadership with a history of successful commitment to youth.”

Hamilton
Lighting: A new version of the town's ordinance governing signs should be ready for a public hearing by September, according to Zoning Administrator David Beniamino. Current code forbids any illumination of a sign within 100 feet of a residential zoning district. Several businesses – The Natural Mercantile, Waterford Homes among them – have been told by letter that their modestly lit signs violate the ordinance.
The recommended changes to the ordinance would permit illuminated signs, with safeguards for neighboring properties and roadways. Call the town office, 540-338-2811, for a copy of the proposed and recommended ordinance changes.
Growing the town: The committee studying bringing several properties on the east and west ends of the current boundaries into town will meet again Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. On the west end, the committee is considering bringing in two lots on the north side of Colonial Highway (including the site of Lowry's Crab Shack) and Taylor's corners to the south.
At the east end of town, options include property on the north side of Colonial highway to Route 704; on the north past Route 704, including the Beautiful South and and some the of the John Andrews development; property on the south up to the safety center and on the south, including the safety center.
Council will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. Sept. 10, before the regular council meeting, on proposals to include a meals tax and transient occupancy tax for property brought into the town that is zoned for commercial uses.
Lowry's: Dominion Virginia is at work putting the electric service in. All that stands between Lowry's Crab Shack and its first customer is a series of final inspections from the county. The Lowrys hope to open for Labor Day.
Council appointment: Patricia Maher-Wade, clerk of the juvenile and domestic relations court, will serve the remainder of Jim Moon's term on the council. Her term will run until June 30, 2008, and she can choose to run for a full four-year term in the May 2008 elections.
